5-Day Online FDP on Econometric Analysis of Structural Gravity Model: Methods and Applications
Dates: 10–14 November 2025
Time: 02:00 PM – 04:00 PM (IST)
Platform: Online (Google Meet)
About the FDP
The Structural Gravity Model has become one of the most powerful empirical tools in economics for analyzing bilateral trade flows and other economic relationships. Initially borrowed from physics, the gravity model is now widely applied in trade policy, migration studies, tourism flows, investment, and capital movements.
Over the past two decades, the traditional gravity framework has undergone significant transformation with advancements on both the theoretical and econometric fronts. However, estimation of gravity models also brings challenges such as zero trade flows, multilateral resistance, endogeneity, heteroskedasticity, and non-linearities. This FDP is designed to help participants address these challenges effectively using STATA software.
The program will blend theoretical discussions with hands-on training, enabling participants to apply econometric techniques directly in their research and policy analysis.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will gain:
- Understanding of the theoretical foundations of the Gravity Model
- Insights into Multilateral Resistance and its significance
- Familiarity with Estimation Methods and Econometric Challenges
- Knowledge of the PPML Method for estimation
- Application of High Dimensional Fixed Effect Panel Data Models
- Hands-on training in STATA for econometric estimation
- Exposure to Databases and Data Issues in trade research
- Practice in FTA Impact Evaluation through empirical exercises
- Insights into Gravity in Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) Framework
- Use of Simulation Analysis for policy applications
