University of Queensland Recruitment 2026: Postdoctoral Research Fellow – History and Management of Work Fatigue

The University of Queensland (UQ) invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the History and Management of Work Fatigue in the School of Communication and Arts. This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for up to 22 months (January 2027 – November 2028, with negotiable start dates), based at the St Lucia Campus, Australia.

The successful candidate will contribute to the Australian Research Council (ARC)-funded project, "The Cultural History of Fatigue", investigating how historical and cultural understandings of workplace fatigue influence the design and implementation of fatigue management technologies in the age of Artificial Intelligence.

About the Position

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will contribute to an interdisciplinary research project examining the historical, cultural, and technological dimensions of workplace fatigue. The project aims to evaluate how AI-enabled fatigue management systems impact diverse users and inform more equitable technology design and workplace practices.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct historical and interdisciplinary research on workplace fatigue.

  • Contribute to the ARC-funded "The Cultural History of Fatigue" project.

  • Undertake stakeholder consultation and focus group studies.

  • Analyse the impact of automated fatigue management technologies.

  • Produce high-quality research publications and project outputs.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary researchers and project partners.

  • Contribute to developing recommendations for equitable fatigue management technologies.

  • Assist in designing user-centred models to reduce the risk of automated discrimination.


Essential Requirements

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • A PhD in History, Communication, Cultural Studies, Humanities, Social Sciences, or a related discipline.

  • Strong research skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Experience in qualitative research, historical analysis, or interdisciplinary research projects.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Interest in the intersection of technology, work, culture, and society.

  • Ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and contribute to collaborative research initiatives.
