About the Project

The selected researcher will contribute to the project “Balancing Personalisation and Polyvocality: Dialogic Interaction for Open-mindedness and Empathy in Conversational AI.”

The project explores how conversational AI systems in museums can offer personalised experiences while encouraging visitors to engage with unfamiliar, marginalised and potentially challenging cultural perspectives. (Werken bij)

The researcher will develop and evaluate a multimodal conversational agent that uses information such as eye gaze, speech and dialogue content to understand visitor engagement, curiosity, openness, confusion and resistance.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct research in multimodal conversational AI, user modelling and cultural heritage interpretation.

• Develop models using gaze, speech and dialogue data.

• Design adaptive dialogue strategies that introduce visitors to diverse perspectives.

• Conduct virtual reality-based user studies.

• Develop reusable datasets, experimental infrastructure and software components.

• Publish research findings in international journals and conferences.

• Collaborate with researchers, museum professionals, curators and Hybrid Intelligence Centre partners. (Werken bij)

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should possess:

• A PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Human–Computer Interaction, Computational Social Science, Digital Humanities, Cognitive Science or a related discipline.

• Experience in conversational AI, dialogue systems, multimodal interaction, adaptive systems or user modelling.

• Experience conducting empirical research or user studies.

• Strong analytical and academic writing skills.

• Excellent English communication skills.

• The ability to work independently and within an interdisciplinary research team. (Werken bij)

Experience in eye tracking, speech analysis, affective computing, virtual reality, reinforcement learning, knowledge graphs, museum studies or participatory design will be considered an advantage.

Appointment and Benefits

The initial appointment will be for one year on a full-time basis, with the possibility of extension for an additional two years following a positive evaluation.
