Research Project

The PhD is part of the EU-HORIZON project:

“Biological Evidence and Mechanism-based Disease Classification for the Improved Diagnosis, Prognosis and Treatment of ME/CFS (DISCOVER-ME)”

The doctoral researcher will contribute to Work Package 7 (WP7), which examines the individual, societal and economic burden of ME/CFS to support the development of improved policy and care frameworks.

Key Research Objectives

The successful candidate will contribute to research that aims to:

  • Analyse the individual, societal and health-system burden of ME/CFS across European contexts

  • Use mixed research methods to examine the broader impact of the condition

  • Investigate the social realities of living with ME/CFS

  • Examine impacts on education, employment, family life and access to care

  • Quantify the economic costs of ME/CFS at individual, household and societal levels

  • Identify unmet needs among people affected by ME/CFS

  • Develop practical recommendations for supportive care and policy change

  • Contribute to improving health-system responsiveness

Research Environment

The successful PhD candidate will join the Discipline of Economics at the University of Galway and contribute to an international research initiative involving economic, social and health-related dimensions of ME/CFS.
