The University of Copenhagen (UCPH) has invited applications for a Postdoctoral Position in Digital Media and Communication at the Department of Communication, Faculty of Humanities. This is a three-year, full-time research position offering an exciting opportunity to contribute to an internationally funded research project exploring the intersection of digital media, the Internet of Things (IoT), sustainability, surveillance, and communication studies.

The appointment will commence on 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.

About the Research Project

The successful candidate will join the GREENWATCH – Green Surveillance: Imagining a Sustainable Internet of Things project, funded by the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant (2025–2029).

The project investigates the opportunities and challenges of using the Internet of Things (IoT) to monitor the impact of human activities on Earth's ecosystems while examining the ethical, political, and societal implications of increased digital surveillance.

The research combines perspectives from communication studies, digital media, environmental sustainability, and technology governance.

Research Focus

The project explores topics including:

The selected researcher will contribute to comparative research examining developments across China, Europe, and the United States.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Conduct interdisciplinary research on digital media and communication.

  • Analyse the ethical and political implications of IoT-based environmental monitoring.

  • Undertake conceptual and normative studies related to digital surveillance and sustainability.

  • Contribute to comparative research across multiple international contexts.

  • Publish research findings in leading academic journals.

  • Present research at conferences and academic events.

  • Collaborate with an international research team working on the GREENWATCH project.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should possess:

  • A Ph.D. in Communication, Media Studies, Digital Media, Sociology, Political Science, Cultural Studies, or a closely related discipline.

  • Strong theoretical and methodological expertise in digital media and communication research.

  • Demonstrated interest in the ethical and political dimensions of digital technologies.

  • Excellent academic writing, research, and analytical skills.

  • A strong publication record or demonstrated research potential.
