About the Project & Opportunity

Linköping University is inviting applications for two full-time academic positions—a PhD Fellowship and a Postdoctoral Position—within the Division of Production Economics (PEK).

The research project lies at the intersection of random matrix theory and statistical inference theory, with direct applications in economics and finance. Specifically, the project aims to develop distributional properties of generalized inverses of high-dimensional sample covariance matrices to create novel linear and nonlinear shrinkage estimators for optimal portfolio construction and risk management.

Open Positions Overview

1. PhD Student in Financial Mathematics or Financial Statistics (Ref: IEI-2026-00230)

  • Duration: 2 years full-time equivalent (extendable up to 2.5–4 years depending on teaching and departmental duties).

  • Core Responsibilities: Conduct doctoral research, complete PhD coursework, and participate in departmental duties or teaching (up to 20% of full-time).

  • Qualifications: Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline (Mathematics, Statistics, or related field with applications in finance/economics), strong analytical skills, and English fluency.

2. Postdoctoral Researcher in Financial Mathematics or Statistics (Ref: IEI-2026-00231)

  • Duration: Temporary contract of 2 years (with possible extension up to a maximum of 3 years).

  • Core Responsibilities: Lead quantitative research, publish in top-tier international journals in statistics, econometrics, or finance, present at international conferences, and carry out teaching duties (up to 20%).

  • Qualifications: Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics, or a quantitative finance discipline (preferably awarded within the last 3 years). Proven expertise in high-dimensional statistical theory and strong programming proficiency in R, MATLAB, or Python are highly desirable.
