IIT Bombay Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) invites applications for its Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship (IPDF) programme. Fellowships are available across various academic departments, centres, schools and interdisciplinary programmes of the institute.

The programme is designed to support early-career researchers in conducting advanced research under the guidance of an IIT Bombay faculty mentor.

Fellowship Details

• Organisation: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay

• Programme: Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship

• Research Areas: Various academic departments, centres, schools and interdisciplinary programmes

• Initial Tenure: One year

• Extension: Up to two additional years, subject to satisfactory academic performance

• Location: Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

• Application Deadline: No fixed last date

Fellowship and Research Grant

Selected fellows will receive:

• Consolidated salary: INR 80,000 per month

• HRA: As per Government of India norms, currently 30% of the consolidated salary

• Contingency grant: INR 1,00,000 per annum on a non-lapsable basis

Eligibility Criteria

Applications are invited from:

• Fresh PhD holders.

• Candidates with a PhD and less than two years of post-PhD experience.

• Research scholars who have submitted their doctoral thesis and are awaiting examination.

Candidates should preferably be below 32 years of age. Age relaxation for SC, ST, OBC-NCL and PwD candidates will be applicable according to Government of India norms.

IIT Bombay’s own PhD scholars are not eligible for the fellowship.

Selection Process

Applications will be evaluated by the concerned academic unit through a process similar to faculty recruitment.

Search committees will review applications periodically and may invite shortlisted candidates for:

• Research seminars

• Academic presentations

• Personal interviews

Selection will depend on the candidate’s research profile, academic achievements, proposed area of work and suitability for the respective academic unit.

Mentorship and Responsibilities

Each selected postdoctoral fellow will be assigned a faculty mentor whose research expertise is closely aligned with the fellow’s proposed work.

In addition to conducting research, the fellow may be assigned reasonable academic or administrative responsibilities by the Head of the concerned academic unit.

Additional Support

Financial assistance may be provided for participation in one international conference during the fellowship period to present research conducted at IIT Bombay, generally after completing one year of the fellowship.
