Overview of Fellowship

The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies invites applications for its prestigious Academy Scholars Program.

The program identifies and funds exceptional, early-career social scientists whose work combines disciplinary excellence with rigorous linguistic competence and in-depth expertise in countries or regions outside the United States or Canada. Selected scholars join an interdisciplinary cohort dedicated to comparative, transnational, and domestic issues, mentored directly by Harvard Academy Senior Scholars.

Fellowship Structure & Benefits

  • Cohort Size: 5 to 6 scholars appointed annually.

  • Duration & Flexibility: 2-year in-residence appointment completed across a 3-year window. Scholars may apply for a one-time leave of up to 12 months between Year 1 and Year 2 to accept or continue a tenure-track teaching appointment.

  • Financial & Research Package:

    • Annual stipend of $80,000 – $90,000.

    • $6,000 annual dedicated research and skill development allowance.

  • Academic Environment: Robust interdisciplinary community engagement through regular seminars, cohort dinners, and mentoring from Harvard faculty. Scholars may also be invited to teach a Harvard course.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to scholars who hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in the social sciences granted within two years of August 1, 2027 (on or after August 1, 2025).

  • Advanced doctoral candidates nearing completion are eligible provided they submit official registrar documentation of degree conferral by June 30, 2027.

  • Disciplinary focus across social sciences (Anthropology, Economics, Government/Political Science, History, Sociology, Public Policy, Law, Psychology, etc.) paired with non-US/Canada regional expertise.

  • Ineligibility: Individuals who already hold or have completed another postdoctoral fellowship are not eligible. Outside employment, awards, or obligations are not permitted during the fellowship.

  1. Curriculum Vitae (CV): Including a full list of publications.

  2. Research Proposal: Maximum 2,000 words detailing intellectual objectives, methodological frameworks, and disciplinary contributions.

  3. Scholarly Writing Sample: English text up to 50 pages (e.g., dissertation chapter or peer-reviewed journal article; cannot be co-authored with an advisor).

  4. PhD Program Transcript: Copy of official or certified graduate transcript.

  5. Three (3) Letters of Recommendation: Submitted confidentially online by recommenders via automated upload links (due by September 28, 2026).
