TU Delft Recruitment 2026: Postdoctoral Position in Future In-Vehicle Touchscreens
Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Netherlands invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position under the NWO-funded "Future In-Vehicle Touch Screens (FITS)" project. This interdisciplinary opportunity is ideal for researchers interested in human-computer interaction, haptics, touch interfaces, aerospace, automotive technologies, and cognitive robotics.
The selected candidate will contribute to the development of next-generation touchscreen technologies that improve safety and usability in moving vehicles.
Position Details
Post Name: Postdoctoral Researcher
Project: Future In-Vehicle Touch Screens (FITS)
Institution: Delft University of Technology (TU Delft)
Location: Delft, Netherlands
Funding Agency: Dutch Research Council (NWO)
About the Project
Modern vehicles increasingly rely on touchscreen interfaces instead of physical buttons and switches. However, vehicle vibrations and motion often result in inaccurate touchscreen interactions, creating safety concerns for drivers and operators.
The FITS project aims to overcome these challenges by developing intelligent touchscreen systems capable of:
Predicting and correcting finger movement disturbances in real time.
Providing artificial tactile (haptic) feedback.
Enabling safer "eyes-off" touchscreen operation.
Improving touchscreen usability in cars, aircraft, and maritime vehicles.
The project is a collaboration between the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering (AE) and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at TU Delft.
Key Responsibilities
The selected Postdoctoral Researcher will:
Conduct fundamental experiments using TU Delft's SIMONA Flight Simulator to develop and optimize touchscreen correction algorithms.
Design, implement, and evaluate adaptive tactile feedback (electrovibration) technologies for in-vehicle touchscreens.
Develop innovative touchscreen hardware and software prototypes.
Integrate prototype technologies with commercial touchscreen systems provided by project partners.
Conduct human-subject experiments and validation studies in real-world road, air, and water vehicles.
Publish research findings in leading scientific journals and conferences.
Contribute to new research proposals and collaborative projects.
Research Areas
The project spans several interdisciplinary fields, including:
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)
Haptic Interfaces
Touchscreen Technologies
Aerospace Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Cognitive Robotics
Human Factors Engineering
Autonomous Systems
Vehicle Interface Design
Experimental Psychology
Embedded Systems
Research Environment
The successful candidate will be appointed within the Aerospace Human-Machine Systems cluster of the Control & Operations Department at TU Delft's Faculty of Aerospace Engineering.
The position will be co-hosted by the Haptic Interface Technology Laboratory (HITLab) within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering's Cognitive Robotics Department.
Researchers will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including:
SIMONA Research Flight Simulator
PH-LAB Research Aircraft
Haptic Interface Technology Laboratory (HITLab)
Advanced experimental laboratories and testing environments
Ideal Candidate Profile
The position is suitable for candidates with expertise in areas such as:
Human-Computer Interaction
Haptics and Tactile Interfaces
Mechanical Engineering
Aerospace Engineering
Robotics
Computer Science
Electrical Engineering
Human Factors
Cognitive Engineering
Control Systems
Candidates with experience in experimental research, prototype development, user studies, or interactive technologies will be highly suited for this role.
Why Join TU Delft?
The selected researcher will have the opportunity to:
Work on an internationally funded cutting-edge research project.
Collaborate with leading experts in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, and cognitive robotics.
Develop next-generation touchscreen technologies with real-world industrial applications.
Access world-class research infrastructure and laboratories.
Publish high-impact research and contribute to future innovations in transportation safety and human-machine interaction.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit their application through the official TU Delft careers portal, ensuring that all required documents are included as specified in the vacancy announcement.
