TU Delft (Delft University of Technology), Netherlands invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational Geomechanics of Gas Migration in Clays. The position is part of the EURAD-2 (European Joint Programme on Radioactive Waste Management) initiative and focuses on developing advanced computational models for gas migration in clay-based materials using physics-based modelling, hydro-mechanical simulations, and machine learning.

About the Project

The research aims to develop efficient stochastic hydro-mechanical modelling frameworks for gas migration in clay formations, addressing key challenges in geological repository performance assessment.

The project focuses on:

  • Gas migration in low-permeability clay materials.

  • Coupled hydro-mechanical processes.

  • Material heterogeneity and uncertainty quantification.

  • Large-scale numerical simulations.

  • Physics-informed machine learning approaches.

The developed models will bridge high-fidelity process understanding with computationally efficient large-scale applications.


Key Research Responsibilities

The selected candidate will:

  • Develop physics-based upscaled numerical models for gas migration in clays.

  • Perform high-fidelity hydro-mechanical simulations.

  • Apply deep learning techniques to generate realistic heterogeneous material representations.

  • Extend stochastic modelling frameworks to include hydro-mechanical coupling.

  • Develop uncertainty quantification (UQ) methodologies for assessing the impact of material variability on gas migration.

  • Contribute to computational model development for repository system performance assessment.

  • Collaborate with researchers within the EURAD-2 consortium and international partners.


Required Qualifications

Candidates should possess:

  • A Ph.D. in Computational Geomechanics, Geomechanics, or a closely related discipline.

  • Strong background in numerical modelling of coupled hydro-mechanical processes.

  • Experience with uncertainty quantification and stochastic modelling.

  • Knowledge of computational mechanics and porous media modelling.

  • Interest in applying machine learning techniques to scientific modelling.

  • Strong programming, analytical, and scientific communication skills.
