Overview
The University of St Andrews invites applications for a Post‑doctoral Research Fellow (Postdoctoral Research Associate) within the School of Mathematics & Statistics. This is a fixed‑term appointment for 3 years to contribute to the EPSRC project: “Applications of symplectic geometry to algebra.”

- Salary: £38,784 – £42,254 per annum

About the Role
The successful candidate will join a dynamic and growing research environment within the School, working closely with Dr Jeff Hicks (grant holder) and members of the newly established Geometry research group. This group explores diverse areas including symplectic geometry, algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, tropical geometry, mirror symmetry, rigidity theory, and geometric group theory.
The role provides opportunities not only to contribute to the core project but also to pursue independent research directions, collaborate internationally, and engage in professional development activities such as:
- Supervising students
- Contributing to teaching (if desired)
- Organising seminars, workshops, and outreach initiatives
The position is supported with funding for travel, computing, and research expenses.
Candidate Profile
We welcome applications from outstanding researchers who can demonstrate:
- A PhD in Mathematics (or near completion at the time of application).
- Research expertise in at least one of the following areas: symplectic geometry, algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, tropical geometry.
- A strong track record (or clear potential) in producing high‑quality research publications.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a research group while developing independent lines of inquiry.
Applicants from all areas of geometry will be considered, but experience in the fields listed above is highly desirable.
Responsibilities
- Conduct high‑level research within the framework of the EPSRC project.
- Collaborate with Dr Jeff Hicks and colleagues in the Geometry research group.
- Publish findings in peer‑reviewed journals and present at international conferences.
- Contribute to the School’s vibrant academic culture through seminars, mentorship, or limited teaching support (optional).
