The positions are based in the Flack Group and are part of fully funded research projects aimed at developing next-generation animal cell lines for sustainable, scalable, and cost-effective cultivated meat production.

About the Project

Cultivated meat is an emerging biotechnology that produces genuine meat products through the in vitro culture of animal cells, offering a sustainable and ethical alternative to conventional meat production.

This project focuses on overcoming current limitations in cultivated meat production, including:

Limited cellular lifespan
Slow cell proliferation
High culture media requirements
Dependence on adherent cell growth

The selected researchers will engineer and evolve bovine satellite cell lines with improved characteristics such as suspension culture capability, enhanced signalling pathways, and increased cellular lifespan to improve scalability and production efficiency.

Research Responsibilities

Selected candidates will:

Engineer and optimize bovine satellite cell lines for cultivated meat production.
Develop improved cellular phenotypes for scalable bioprocesses.
Characterize engineered cell lines using:
- Flow cytometry
- Advanced microscopy
- Transcriptomics
Design and lead independent research projects within the field of cellular agriculture.
Collaborate with industrial partners and external experts.
Contribute to scientific publications and research dissemination.
Assist in supervising PhD, MSc, and BSc students.
Participate in grant writing and research funding activities.
