Roles and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will join the "Power over Platforms?" project hosted at The Center for Tracking and Society. The candidate’s research activities will contribute to empirical studies analyzing how civil society groups, interest groups, and other actors actively seek to shape how consumer-facing content platforms (like Google, Meta, TikTok, and X) operate across different jurisdictions.

Academic Delivery: Capture and analyze platform governance debates as they play out online and offline, and consistently publish scientific articles within the context of the project.
Scholastic Research: Map actors involved in platform governance across different countries, interview individuals across governance networks, and conduct qualitative fieldwork at relevant events worldwide.
Institutional Excellence: Identify key individuals working in the domain, document their career trajectories, and actively participate in the organization of project activities and research events.

Desired Profile & Eligibility Criteria

Educational Background: Academic qualifications at the PhD level with a strong background in digital media and communications research, or as a social scientist researching digital media and communications.
Research & Teaching Track: Proven experience with platform studies focusing on governance, content moderation, privacy/data protection, or generative AI, backed by a strong track record of relevant empirical work.
Core Competencies: Preferred experience in qualitative interviews, fieldwork, and document analysis. Ability to work in one or more major EU languages (e.g., German, French) in addition to English is highly welcomed.
