Postdoctoral Researcher – Complexity-Aligned Innovation and Institutional Design

About the Project

The project explores how innovation systems can evolve beyond traditional growth-focused models to become more adaptive, resilient, and responsive to complex societal challenges.

Researchers will investigate innovative governance models by integrating:

  • Complexity and systems thinking

  • Innovation studies

  • Collective intelligence

  • Institutional design

  • Participatory and action research methods

The research will be conducted in close collaboration with Finnish and international innovation ecosystem stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will:

  • Contribute to both conceptual and empirical research activities.

  • Conduct qualitative research in real-world innovation environments.

  • Carry out in-depth interviews and field-based research.

  • Analyze innovation governance and institutional transformation.

  • Collaborate with researchers, policymakers, and innovation ecosystem partners.

  • Support the development of practical frameworks for complexity-aligned innovation systems.

Eligibility

The ideal candidate should have:

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline.

  • Strong background in complexity theory, systems thinking, innovation studies, or institutional design.

  • Experience with qualitative and empirical research methods.

  • Excellent analytical, communication, and collaboration skills.

  • Interest in interdisciplinary and participatory research.

Salary

  • €4,160 – €4,300 per month

  • Salary will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications and experience in accordance with Aalto University salary guidelines.

Contract Duration

  • 12–15 months (depending on the selected candidate's start date).

Work Location

  • Finland

  • Candidates are required to reside in Finland for the duration of the appointment.
