About the Research Project

The project examines the relationship between geological landscapes and social, political, and historical processes in Latin America. Rather than viewing geological formations as static natural features, the research investigates how they shape and are shaped by histories of inequality, territorial conflict, resource governance, resistance, and environmental change.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research team working at the intersection of political ecology, anthropology, geography, and social sciences.

Research Responsibilities

The selected PhD candidate will:

Conduct independent doctoral research on geosocial worlds and territorial politics in Latin America.
Carry out literature reviews, field-based and qualitative research where applicable.
Analyse social, political, historical, and environmental data.
Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
Present research at international conferences and academic workshops.
Collaborate with researchers across disciplines at Utrecht University.
Contribute to teaching and departmental academic activities when required.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should have:

A Master's degree in Social Sciences, Anthropology, Geography, Political Science, Latin American Studies, Environmental Studies, or a related discipline.
Strong interest in territorial politics, environmental governance, and Latin American societies.
Excellent analytical, research, and academic writing skills.
Strong written and spoken English proficiency.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment.
