About the Project
This PhD project forms part of a broader research programme investigating atomic-scale spin dynamics and quantum magnetism.
Researchers in the group use Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) to visualize, manipulate, and position individual magnetic atoms with atomic precision. By assembling custom-designed atomic spin structures, the project aims to create real-world realizations of textbook spin Hamiltonians and investigate new quantum phenomena.
A key objective of the research is to study atomic assemblies in which neighboring atoms are sufficiently close for their outermost valence electrons to form molecular orbitals, resulting in delocalized quantum magnetism over extended distances.
Research Objectives
The selected PhD candidate will work on:
Investigating delocalized magnetism in atomic spin assemblies.
Understanding interactions between localized and delocalized electron spins.
Exploring coherent quantum dynamics of electronic, orbital, and nuclear magnetic moments.
Studying atomic-scale quantum systems using advanced spectroscopy techniques.
Expanding fundamental knowledge in quantum magnetism and nanoscale quantum materials.
Key Responsibilities
During the PhD, the selected candidate will:
Design and assemble custom atomic spin structures using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM).
Perform advanced measurements using:
Inelastic Electron Tunneling Spectroscopy (IETS)
Electron Spin Resonance (ESR)
Pulsed nanosecond measurement techniques
Investigate coherent quantum dynamics of atomic-scale magnetic systems.
Conduct experiments involving single-shot nuclear readout and Electron-Nuclear Double Resonance (ENDOR).
Analyse experimental data and contribute to theoretical understanding.
Publish research findings in leading international journals.
Present research at national and international scientific conferences.
Collaborate with researchers working in quantum nanoscience and atomic-scale physics.
