About the Project

Healthcare systems worldwide face growing pressure due to increasing costs and rising numbers of patients with chronic mobility disorders such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Parkinson's Disease, and Stroke. This PhD project is part of the "Care is Coming Home!" programme, which seeks to develop advanced technologies that enable patients to safely monitor and manage their health from home.

The research focuses on creating novel joint motion monitoring devices capable of accurately tracking disease progression using wearable sensors, reducing dependence on hospital visits while supporting remote patient care.

Research Responsibilities

The selected PhD researcher will:

  • Design, develop, and evaluate innovative wearable devices for monitoring joint motion in home environments.

  • Develop finger stiffness measurement technologies for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Create motion monitoring solutions for stroke patients without relying on camera-based systems.

  • Design drift compensation algorithms using combined IMU and stretch sensor configurations.

  • Conduct multidisciplinary research combining engineering, biomechanics, healthcare, and user-centred design.

  • Collaborate with hospitals, rehabilitation centres, patient organizations, universities, and industry partners.

Research Focus Areas

The project includes research in:

  • Wearable Healthcare Devices
