About the Project
Modern crop breeding increasingly relies on genome sequence models to accelerate plant improvement. However, AI models trained on sensitive genomic datasets may unintentionally memorize and reproduce parts of their training data, creating privacy risks for commercially valuable breeding information.
This PhD project aims to characterize, quantify, and mitigate memorization risks in sequence models, ensuring privacy while maintaining high-performance AI systems for crop breeding. The research will bridge machine learning, computational biology, and privacy-preserving AI to develop practical solutions for secure genomic data analysis.
Research Responsibilities
The selected PhD researcher will:
Investigate privacy risks in genome sequence models used for crop breeding.
Develop methods to quantify memorization and data leakage in AI models.
Design privacy-preserving machine learning techniques for genomic datasets.
Study how plant genome characteristics influence model memorization behavior.
Translate research findings into practical guidelines for secure crop breeding applications.
Collaborate with researchers at TU Delft and industry partner KeyGene.
Research Focus Areas
The project includes research in:
Artificial Intelligence
Privacy-Preserving Machine Learning
Bioinformatics
Computational Biology
Plant Genomics
Genome Sequence Modelling
