About the Project

Laser satellite communication is emerging as a key technology for future ultra-high-speed space-based data transmission, particularly for inter-satellite and ground-to-satellite communication links. However, atmospheric turbulence and long transmission distances remain major challenges to reliable optical communication.

This PhD project aims to develop and experimentally validate advanced opto-mechatronic systems that improve the performance and reliability of laser communication with geostationary satellites by combining multiple laser beams to achieve constructive interference and enhanced signal strength.

Research Responsibilities

The selected PhD researcher will:

  • Develop experimental opto-mechatronic systems for laser satellite communication.

  • Design and validate advanced optical ground station technologies.

  • Integrate opto-electronic and opto-mechanical systems in laboratory environments.

  • Develop techniques for synchronized transmission using multiple laser beams.

  • Measure and actively control laser beam performance to improve communication reliability.

  • Conduct experimental testing and performance validation of optical communication systems.

  • Collaborate with leading academic and industrial partners within the STARS consortium.

Research Focus Areas

The project covers advanced topics including:

  • Laser Satellite Communications

  • Free Space Optical (FSO) Communications

  • Adaptive Optics

  • Opto-Mechatronics

  • Optical Engineering

  • Optical Ground Stations

  • Geostationary Satellite Communications

  • Precision Optical Systems

  • Experimental Photonics

  • Space Communication Technologies

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should possess:

  • An MSc degree (or equivalent) recognized in the Netherlands.

  • Background in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • Demonstrated experience in experimental research.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and laboratory skills.

  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.

Candidates with experience in optics, photonics, precision engineering, mechatronics, or optical instrumentation will be preferred.

Why Join TU Delft?

This PhD position offers the opportunity to:

  • Conduct cutting-edge research in next-generation laser satellite communication technologies.

  • Work within the prestigious STARS research project alongside leading academic and industrial partners.

  • Collaborate with organizations including TU Eindhoven, Airbus Netherlands, IMEC Leuven, TNO, SES, FSO Instruments, Celestia STS, and Flexible Optical.

  • Access state-of-the-art laboratories and advanced optical research facilities.

  • Contribute to future high-speed space communication systems with global impact.

How to Apply
