About the Project

As electric vehicle adoption continues to grow, repurposing used EV batteries for grid support presents a promising solution for sustainable energy storage. However, technical, regulatory, and operational challenges continue to limit large-scale deployment.

This PhD project aims to develop innovative methods for integrating second-life batteries into electricity distribution networks and high-power DC charging systems while improving their reliability, safety, and techno-economic performance.

The research contributes to the transition toward smarter, cleaner, and more resilient energy infrastructure.


Research Responsibilities

The selected PhD candidate will:

  • Investigate the integration of second-life EV batteries into grid support applications.

  • Develop modelling and control strategies for battery integration in DC charging networks.

  • Assess battery reliability, safety, and long-term operational performance.

  • Evaluate environmental and techno-economic aspects of second-life battery systems.

  • Study regulatory and operational challenges affecting battery deployment.

  • Design scalable integration frameworks for high-power DC grids.

  • Collaborate with industrial partners, including ABB Delft, on practical energy storage solutions.

  • Publish research findings in leading journals and conferences.
