TU Delft PhD Position 2026
TU Delft PhD Position 2026 | Distribution Systems Flexible Operation under Uncertain and Incomplete Information
TU Delft (Delft University of Technology), Netherlands invites applications for a PhD position in Distribution Systems Flexible Operation under Uncertain and Incomplete Information. The project is part of the Future Network Services (FNS) Project and focuses on developing AI-driven solutions for the future of intelligent electricity distribution networks.
Position Details
Organization: TU Delft
Position: PhD Candidate
Research Area: Smart Grids, Power Systems & Artificial Intelligence
Project: Future Network Services (FNS)
Duration: 4 Years
Location: Delft, Netherlands
About the Project
As renewable energy resources, electric vehicles, heat pumps, and smart buildings continue to transform modern electricity networks, distribution systems face increasing uncertainty and operational complexity.
This PhD project aims to develop advanced methodologies that enable flexible operation of low-voltage distribution networks despite limited data availability and operational uncertainty. The research will explore how Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning can improve network observability, coordination of distributed energy resources (DERs), and real-time decision-making.
The project is part of the Future Network Services (FNS) 6G Project, led by TNO, which seeks to enable next-generation real-time electricity infrastructure through advanced communication technologies.
Research Responsibilities
The selected PhD candidate will:
Investigate flexible operation of electricity distribution systems under uncertain and incomplete information.
Develop AI and Machine Learning models for smart grid applications.
Design methods to coordinate Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and smart buildings.
Improve distribution system observability using surrogate models.
Address challenges related to limited data availability and operational uncertainty.
Collaborate with industrial partners and multidisciplinary research teams.
Publish research findings, open-source code, and datasets.
Support teaching activities, including student supervision and laboratory sessions.
