About the Project
The PhD candidate will join a consortium led by Allseas that is developing a micro High-Temperature Reactor (HTR) with a pebble-bed design for land-based and maritime use. The research will generate experimental datasets to support reactor safety assessment and model validation.
The project will contribute directly to the safe deployment of advanced microreactor technologies through experimental investigation of heat transfer, passive cooling, and reactor behaviour under challenging operating conditions.
Key Research Responsibilities
The selected PhD candidate will:
Design, build, and operate non-nuclear thermal-hydraulic experimental facilities.
Investigate passive heat removal in pebble-bed reactor concepts.
Study reactor behaviour during water ingress scenarios.
Conduct experiments involving heated pebbles and advanced measurement systems.
Analyse heat transfer, natural convection, boiling phenomena, and hotspot formation.
Simulate maritime operating conditions, including vessel inclinations up to 90 degrees.
Study pebble movement, collision dynamics, and local density variation under non-stationary conditions.
Generate validated datasets for reactor modelling and safety analysis.
Collaborate with researchers working on high-fidelity reactor modelling.
