TU Delft PhD Position 2026: Joint Motion Monitoring Devices for Home Environments
Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Netherlands invites applications for a fully funded PhD position on the development of joint motion monitoring devices for home environments. This interdisciplinary research opportunity is part of the "Care is Coming Home!" programme and focuses on creating innovative healthcare technologies that enable patients with chronic mobility conditions to safely manage their health from home.
Position Details
Position: PhD Candidate
Research Title: Joint Motion Monitoring Devices for Home Environments
Institution: Delft University of Technology (TU Delft)
Faculty: Industrial Design Engineering & Mechanical Engineering
Project Duration: 4 Years (Fully Funded)
About the Project
Healthcare systems worldwide are facing increasing pressure due to rising costs and a shortage of healthcare professionals. At the same time, millions of people living with chronic mobility disorders require continuous monitoring while maintaining independent lives.
This PhD project aims to develop innovative home-based motion monitoring technologies that enable quantitative assessment of disease progression and support remote healthcare management.
The research is part of the "Care is Coming Home!" programme—a large multidisciplinary initiative involving universities, hospitals, companies, rehabilitation centres, and patient organizations dedicated to advancing home-based healthcare technologies.
Research Objectives
The selected PhD candidate will contribute to the design, development, and evaluation of novel technologies that monitor joint movement in patients with chronic mobility limitations.
Key research goals include:
Developing wearable devices for monitoring joint motion in home environments.
Designing a finger stiffness measurement device for patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).
Developing drift compensation algorithms using combined Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) and stretch sensors.
Creating solutions for monitoring movement changes in stroke patients without relying on camera-based systems.
Enabling accurate and quantitative assessment of disease progression outside clinical settings.
Key Responsibilities
During the PhD, the selected candidate will:
Design and develop innovative wearable healthcare monitoring devices.
