Focus

Early Damage Detection in Composite Structures

About the Project

Modern composite structures used in aerospace and wind energy are becoming increasingly lightweight and complex, making early-stage damage difficult to detect. This project aims to address that challenge by integrating Quantum Photonic Vibrometry (QPV) with AI-driven vibration analysis to identify micro-scale structural damage before critical failure occurs.

The research will contribute to safer, smarter, and more sustainable engineering systems through collaboration with leading academic and industrial partners.

Research Responsibilities

The selected PhD researcher will:

  • Investigate advanced vibration measurement techniques for structural damage detection.

  • Combine Quantum Photonic Vibrometry (QPV) with machine learning methods for identifying subtle structural changes.

  • Design and conduct vibration experiments using QPV sensing systems.

  • Develop interpretable AI models for structural health monitoring and condition assessment.

  • Deploy lightweight AI models on edge AI hardware and reservoir computing platforms for real-time monitoring.

  • Collaborate with researchers and industry partners on both fundamental research and practical engineering applications.

Research Focus Areas

The project involves research in:

  • Structural Health Monitoring (SHM)

  • Quantum Photonic Vibrometry (QPV)

  • Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning

  • Signal Processing

  • Vibration Analysis

  • Explainable AI

  • Edge AI

  • Reservoir Computing

  • Aerospace Structures

  • Wind Energy Systems

  • Composite Materials

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should possess:

  • A Master's degree in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related discipline.

  • Strong interest in vibration measurement, structural monitoring, AI, or signal processing.

  • Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, or similar scientific computing tools.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and research skills.

  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.

Candidates with experience in machine learning, vibration analysis, or structural health monitoring will have an advantage.

Why Join TU Delft?

This PhD position offers an opportunity to:

  • Conduct cutting-edge research at the intersection of quantum sensing and artificial intelligence.

  • Work with state-of-the-art sensing laboratories and advanced computational resources.

  • Collaborate with leading academic researchers and industrial partners.

  • Develop innovative technologies for aerospace and renewable energy applications.

  • Gain international research experience in one of Europe's leading technical universities.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should apply through the official TU Delft recruitment portal, submitting all required academic documents and supporting materials as specified in the official vacancy announcement.
