Overview
This ICSSR-sponsored programme strengthens research capabilities of early-career faculty in social sciences, with a focused lens on cultural studies—its methodologies, ethics, and interdisciplinary connections. Participants will engage with tools, frameworks, and hands-on practices essential for designing, conducting, and communicating high-quality research in diverse, multicultural contexts.
Programme Goals
- Build critical awareness of how culture, society, and politics intersect in shaping contemporary social issues.
- Enhance methodological competence in qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research (including ethnography and case studies).
- Deepen ethical sensitivity in research involving diverse and marginalised communities.
- Strengthen academic writing, proposal development, and research communication.
- Equip participants for fieldwork and data management in complex social settings.
Who Should Apply
- Young faculty members (Lecturer/Assistant Professor) in social science disciplines from Indian Universities/Deemed Universities/Colleges/Institutions of National Importance/ICSSR Research Institutes recognised by UGC, New Delhi.
- Prior attendance at an ICSSR (or similar sponsor) capacity-building programme disqualifies eligibility for this round.
- No leave of any kind is permissible during the course period.
- A recommendation letter from the forwarding authority is required.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:
- Identify and apply core components of research (problem, context, text, methodology, voice).
- Distinguish between description, analysis, and argument in social science writing.
- Design culturally informed proposals and papers; conceptualise research writing in social sciences.
- Engage with collaborative and multidisciplinary research approaches.
Broad Thematic Coverage
- Foundations of Cultural Studies: Culture, identity, power, and social structures; the “cultural turn” in social sciences.
- Methods & Tools: Surveys, interviews, focus groups; digital tools (NVivo, Zotero, ATLAS.ti); citation management and open access.
- Data & Ethics: Qualitative vs. quantitative data; ethics of data collection; working with governmental/institutional/big data.
- Ethnography & Decoloniality: Positionality, fieldwork stages and challenges; decolonising methodologies and indigenous approaches.
- Library & E-Resources: Using catalogues and reference tools; accessing JSTOR, EPW, SSRN, Shodhganga; databases and repositories.
- Culture, Nationalism & Identity: Caste, gender, region; diaspora and transnational identities (with a focus on West Asia).
- Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS): Philosophical foundations, methodological pluralism, applications in social research.
- Analysis & Writing: Qualitative coding and thematic analysis; quantitative analysis with SPSS/R; academic writing, literature reviews, and plagiarism avoidance.
- Proposals & New Media: Research proposal writing, digital publics, diaspora studies; interdisciplinary writing in cultural studies.
- Presentations & Feedback: Group proposals, mock presentations, expert reviews, and final reflections.
Funding, Facilities & Intake
- Programme Fee: Fully sponsored by ICSSR (no registration fee).
- Accommodation & Meals: Accommodation for outstation participants; breakfast, lunch, dinner, and refreshments for all participants.
- Travel: Reimbursement for outstation participants (shortest route; AC 3-tier) as per ICSSR rules on submission of original tickets; local conveyance not reimbursed.
- Intake: 30 participants (10 from the city, 10 from the state, 10 from outside the state).
