About the Opportunity
The Asia Research Institute (ARI) invites applications from ambitious scholars in the humanities and social sciences to conduct cutting-edge research on Asia. Selection will consider the quality of the proposed research and publication plans, the applicant’s track record, and the fit with ARI’s Research Clusters and their foci (applicants must indicate up to two clusters in the proposal). Given ARI’s growing portfolio of externally funded work, potential to collaborate on competitive grant applications is an advantage.
Role & Responsibilities
- Work under the supervision of the relevant Cluster Leader.
- Lead/organise workshops and conferences; participate in cluster projects.
- Develop new initiatives, including grant applications.
- Pursue an independent publication agenda during the fellowship.
- Contribute to administrative and committee work as assigned; participate actively in ARI seminars and events.
Eligibility
- PhD in a relevant field from a reputable university by the time of appointment.
- Final-year PhD candidates may apply if confirmed for graduation by the ARI start date (Registrar’s letter required).
- Existing publication record and plausible plans for high-quality outputs during the fellowship.
- Clear alignment with ARI Research Cluster(s).
Terms of Appointment
- Tenure: 2 years.
- Commencement windows: Jun/Jul 2026 or Dec 2026/Jan 2027.
- Remuneration: S$6,000 per month (all-in; includes housing/living stipends).
- Travel assistance: Provided to eligible candidates.
- Research support: Funding available for fieldwork and conference attendance (on application and approval).
- Benefits: Singapore Citizens/PRs eligible for provident fund; all salary/benefits subject to local taxation.
- Housing: University housing not provided (fellows arrange their own accommodation).
- Additional NUS benefits and information on working/living in Singapore are available via Why Join Us (university site).
- Appointment is subject to NUS approval and relevant work pass issuance by the Ministry of Manpower.

- Research synopsis (max 2 single-spaced pages) covering:
- Link to prior (esp. doctoral) work and experience
- Contribution to the selected ARI research cluster(s) (name up to 2 clusters)
- Publication plans for the 2-year term
- One short sample of published work (preferably in English).
- Contact details of at least two referees.
