15 Foreign Universities Eye Hyderabad for New Campuses

Hyderabad is emerging as one of India's most attractive destinations for international higher education, with around 15 foreign universities expressing interest in establishing campuses in the city.

According to recent reports, universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand are in discussions with the Telangana government to explore opportunities for setting up offshore campuses under the UGC (Setting up and Operation of Campuses of Foreign Higher Educational Institutions in India) Regulations, 2023.

The initiative aligns with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to internationalize India's higher education ecosystem by attracting globally reputed universities to establish campuses in the country.

Growing Interest from Leading Global Universities

Several institutions have already initiated the approval process. Reports indicate that the University of Colorado and the University of London have submitted applications to the UGC to establish campuses in Hyderabad. Additionally, a US-based university is expected to begin academic operations in 2027, initially from a leased facility in Gachibowli.

Why Hyderabad?

Hyderabad has become a preferred destination for global universities due to its:

  • Strong IT, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and aerospace ecosystem

  • Presence of leading institutions and research centres

  • Growing startup and innovation landscape

  • Excellent infrastructure and international connectivity

  • Large pool of talented students and skilled professionals

These factors make the city an ideal hub for global academic institutions seeking to establish a long-term presence in India.

A Boost for Indian Higher Education

The arrival of international universities is expected to:

  • Expand access to globally recognised degree programmes

  • Promote collaborative research and innovation

  • Strengthen industry-academia partnerships

  • Enhance student and faculty mobility

  • Improve graduate employability through international curricula

  • Position India as a global destination for higher education

With several prestigious universities already approved to establish campuses in India and many more expressing interest, the country's higher education landscape is entering a transformative phase.

As India continues to implement the vision of NEP 2020, Hyderabad is poised to become one of the nation's leading international education hubs, offering students world-class educational opportunities without leaving the country.
