The appointment will be made depending on qualifications and experience:

  • Grade I: £39,906 – £44,746 per annum

  • Grade J: £43,482 – £50,253 per annum


About the Role

The successful candidate will join the Composites University Technology Research Centre (UTC) to undertake innovative research in multi-scale finite element modelling of composite materials.

The position is supported by Rolls-Royce plc and focuses on developing advanced computational tools capable of predicting progressive damage and structural integrity under complex loading and environmental conditions.


Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will:

  • Develop and validate multi-scale finite element analysis (FEA) tools for composite materials.

  • Predict progressive damage evolution under:

    • Quasi-static loading

    • Fatigue loading

    • Impact loading

  • Investigate environmental effects such as:

    • Temperature variation

    • Moisture uptake

  • Assess the structural integrity and performance of composite components with through-thickness reinforcement.

  • Collaborate across multiple research projects within the Bristol UTC.

  • Regularly report research progress to the UTC team and Rolls-Royce plc.

  • Publish original research in high-impact international scientific journals.

    • Abaqus Standard/Explicit

    • LS-DYNA

  • Development of user subroutines.

  • Through-thickness reinforcement modelling.

  • Industry-led collaborative research projects.

  • Scientific programming and computational modelling.

  • Publishing in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.
