The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela invites applications from eligible candidates for two Junior Research Fellow (JRF-PhD) positions under a Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) sponsored research project in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering. The appointment is temporary and contractual, with an opportunity to pursue Ph.D. at NIT Rourkela as per institute norms.

Project Title
Modelling and Predicting Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in High Mountain Asian Region using Ensemble Machine Learning
Essential Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
First Class in Matriculation and Class XII.
B.Tech./B.E. in:
Computer Science & Engineering (CSE)
Information Technology (IT)
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Data Science (DS)
Atmospheric Science
Oceanography
Remote Sensing
with
Valid GATE Score
Minimum CGPA of 6.5/10 or 60% marks
OR
M.E./M.Tech. in:
CSE
IT
AI
DS
Atmospheric Science
Oceanography
Remote Sensing
with
Minimum CGPA of 7.0/10 or 65% marks from a recognized institution.
Desirable Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates having:
Strong programming skills in Python or MATLAB
Experience or coursework in:
Machine Learning
Deep Learning
Advanced Ensemble Learning Techniques
Familiarity with:
Satellite remote sensing observations
GIS tools (ArcGIS/QGIS)
Basic understanding of weather forecasting methodologies
PCA, Random Forest, Extra Trees Classifier, and related AI techniques
Valid GATE qualification
Job Responsibilities
The selected candidates will:
Develop advanced ensemble machine learning models for predicting Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).
Integrate spatio-temporal datasets, including satellite imagery, precipitation, glacier melt, and topographical information.
Perform high-dimensional feature engineering and predictive modelling.
Collaborate with numerical weather prediction systems for hazard assessment.
Assist the Principal Investigator in project implementation, publications, technical reports, and project deliverables.
Fellowship & Benefits
Year 1 & 2: INR 37,000 per month + HRA (as applicable)
Year 3: INR 42,000 per month + HRA (as applicable)
