The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad has invited applications for the position of ANRF Junior Research Fellow (ANRF JRF) under a sponsored research project in the Department of Civil Engineering.

The selected candidate will contribute to research involving machine learning, satellite-based rainfall datasets, hydrological modelling, and real-time flash-flood forecasting.

The selected candidate may also be considered for PhD enrolment, subject to fulfilling the admission requirements of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

Project Title

A Novel Machine Learning-Driven Real-Time Flash Flood Forecasting Framework Using 3D Storm Bias-Corrected and Downscaled Satellite-Based Precipitation Estimates

Essential Qualifications

Candidates must fulfil all the following requirements:

• M.Tech. in Water Resources Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Hydrology, Environmental Engineering, Geoinformatics, Remote Sensing and GIS, Civil Engineering, Earth Sciences, or an equivalent specialisation

• Valid GATE or NET qualification

• B.Tech. in Civil Engineering or Agricultural Engineering and Technology

Candidates awaiting their M.Tech. degree results are also eligible to apply.

Desirable Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates with:

• Experience or exposure in hydrological modelling

• Experience working with large-scale climate or remote-sensing datasets

• Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, or R

Job Responsibilities

The selected candidate will work on improving rainfall and flood forecasting across India using satellite-based rainfall datasets. The work will include:

• Developing bias-correction and downscaling techniques for improved precipitation estimates

• Analysing large-scale satellite rainfall datasets

• Applying machine-learning methods to rainfall and flood forecasting

• Using hydrological models to simulate flood responses

• Developing more accurate real-time flash-flood forecasting methods

Fellowship

• First and Second Years: INR 37,000 per month plus 20% HRA

• Third Year: INR 42,000 per month plus 20% HRA

HRA will be admissible instead of hostel accommodation when hostel facilities are unavailable.

Age Limit

The upper age limit is 28 years as of the date of application.

Age relaxation will be provided to SC, ST, OBC, PwD and female candidates according to Government of India rules.
