The Department of Botany, Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, has invited applications for Two (02) Junior Research Fellow (JRF) positions under a Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India-funded research project. The project will be carried out under the supervision of Dr. Prashant Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany.

Project Title

Integrating Phylogenomics and Metabolomics: A Polyphasic Approach to Heterocytous Cyanobacterial Systematics and Functional Characterization

Project Overview

The research project aims to resolve the taxonomy and evolutionary relationships of heterocytous cyanobacteria through an integrated polyphasic approach combining:

• Molecular phylogeny

• Phylogenomics

• Morphology

• Metabolomics

Fellowship

• First Two Years (JRF): INR 37,000 per month + 18% HRA

• Third Year (SRF): INR 42,000 per month + 18% HRA (as per DBT norms)

Essential Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

• M.Sc. in Botany, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Applied Microbiology, Plant Science, Life Science, or a related discipline with at least 55% marks or equivalent.

• A valid JRF/NET/GATE qualification.

Desirable Skills

Preference will be given to candidates with hands-on experience in:

• Microbiological and molecular biology techniques

• Cyanobacterial/algal culture handling

• DNA extraction

• PCR

• Sequence analysis

• Bioinformatics

• Metabolomics

• Related laboratory techniques

Roles & Responsibilities

The selected candidates will be involved in:

• Isolation and cultivation of heterocytous cyanobacteria

• Polyphasic characterization using morphological, molecular, and metabolomic approaches

• Laboratory and field experiments

• Data analysis

• Preparation of research reports and scientific publications
