The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) is currently inviting applications for a Research Assistant position in the field of Economics and Finance. This role is highly suited for students seeking pre-doctoral research experience to facilitate a transition into top-tier PhD programs in Economics, Finance, or related management disciplines.

Role & Responsibilities

The selected candidate will assist with ongoing research projects, which will require both theoretical and empirical analysis.

• Theoretical responsibilities will include organizing related literature, replicating academic papers, and potentially solving mathematical models.

• Empirical responsibilities will involve coding and running surveys and experiments.

• The candidate will also be responsible for collecting, organizing, visualizing, and analyzing both large-scale and small-scale data sets, as well as writing comprehensive reports.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Educational Background: Candidates must be at least in the final year of their Bachelor's degree in Economics, Statistics, Operations Research, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or a similar discipline that requires strong mathematical skills. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a Master's degree or higher.

Technical Proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in at least one programming language, such as Python, STATA, or R. Familiarity with MATLAB and LaTeX, alongside a proven ability to quickly learn new programming tools, will be considered an asset.

Subject Knowledge: Strong quantitative training is highly desirable, especially in subjects like Real Analysis, Optimization, Linear Algebra, and Probability Theory. Furthermore, knowledge of Game Theory, Experimental Design, and Advanced Econometrics will be highly advantageous.

Experience & Soft Skills: Prior experience in handling and analyzing datasets is preferred. Candidates must possess a solid understanding of econometric methods and economic concepts, coupled with strong written and verbal communication skills in English. Intellectual curiosity, creativity, a strong work ethic, and an openness to learning new approaches are highly valued.

Employment Details

Tenure: The initial appointment is structured for a period of six months. Extensions up to one year and beyond are possible, contingent upon performance appraisals and the academic progress of the Research Assistant. The principal investigator holds the authority to decide on the continuation of the RA-ship.

Compensation: A competitive monthly salary will be offered based on the candidate's prior qualifications and experience, in accordance with the guidelines set by IIM Ahmedabad.

Location: Office space will be provided on the IIM Ahmedabad campus, making it optimal for the candidate to locate near the campus. While there is some flexibility in location, the Research Assistant must be available for regular offline meetings when required.

Joining Date: The successful candidate will be expected to join as soon as possible after selection.

Interview Process: Shortlisted candidates will undergo testing on their ability to comprehend a relevant research paper and perform analysis on a curated problem set, which includes writing simulation/estimation codes. These evaluation tests will be conducted via interviews over Zoom.
