Durham University is inviting applications for the position of GCCS Research Assistant within the Department of Sociology. The role is based at the Global Centre for Contextual Safeguarding (GCCS) and offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to interdisciplinary research focused on contextual safeguarding, social justice, and youth welfare.

This part-time, hybrid-working position is offered on a 12-month fixed-term contract and is ideal for candidates with a background in sociology, social research, or related disciplines.

About the Global Centre for Contextual Safeguarding (GCCS)

The Global Centre for Contextual Safeguarding (GCCS), established in 2025, builds upon Durham University's internationally recognised Contextual Safeguarding Programme. Based within the Department of Sociology, the Centre collaborates with experts from Law, Business, Education, and Psychology to improve safeguarding practices for children and young people through innovative research, policy development, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Role Overview

The successful candidate will support the Centre's research and operational activities across multiple workstreams. The position focuses on integrating the voices and experiences of children and young people into the Centre's ongoing research and programme development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support interdisciplinary research projects within GCCS.

  • Assist with research administration and Centre operations.

  • Contribute to project coordination across multiple research workstreams.

  • Support activities that strengthen contextual safeguarding practices.

  • Help integrate the perspectives of children and young people into research outputs.

  • Collaborate with academic staff and external stakeholders.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • An interest in social justice and safeguarding research.

  • A Master's degree or be working towards a Master's in Sociology, Social Research Methods, or a closely related discipline.

  • Strong research, analytical, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively within interdisciplinary research teams.

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary: £31,236–£33,002 per annum (pro rata)
