About the Role

The Department of Education seeks a lecturer with expertise in Spanish, German and/or French. Candidates with expertise in one European modern language alongside Chinese or Arabic are also encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will contribute primarily to:

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Modern Languages Programme

  • MSc in Learning and Teaching (MLT) Programme

  • Potential contributions to the MSc in Teacher Education (MTEd) programme

The role provides an excellent opportunity for experienced Modern Languages teachers to transition into teacher education within one of the world's leading universities.

Key Responsibilities

The appointed lecturer will:

  • Deliver teaching across the Department's professional programmes.

  • Design and deliver lectures, seminars, and workshops.

  • Undertake assessment, marking, and provide student feedback.

  • Supervise assignments and dissertations.

  • Develop curriculum and course materials.

  • Contribute to academic administration and departmental initiatives.

  • Support students undertaking professional placements.

  • Liaise with partner schools, mentors, and tutors.

  • Participate in admissions processes and departmental committees.

  • Engage in research and scholarly activities related to learning, teaching, and teacher education.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should possess:

  • A relevant Master's degree or higher.

  • A good first degree in one or more of the following languages:

    • Spanish

    • German

    • French

    • Chinese

  • A recognised UK teaching qualification or equivalent teacher status.

  • Substantial experience of successful Modern Languages teaching at the secondary level.

  • Strong pedagogical knowledge and experience in designing and delivering high-quality teaching.

  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience mentoring or tutoring within initial and/or continuing teacher education.

  • Higher education teaching experience.

  • Familiarity with current research in Modern Languages education.

  • Evidence of scholarly engagement, including publications.
