The College of Arts and Sciences, The University of Tokyo, invites applications for Part-Time Lecturer (English) positions to teach undergraduate English language courses at its Komaba Campus. This opportunity is ideal for experienced English educators and scholars seeking to contribute to one of Japan’s leading universities.

Position Details

• Post: Part-Time Lecturer (English)

• Number of Positions: Two or More

• Affiliation: Department of English Language, College of Arts and Sciences, The University of Tokyo

• Location: Komaba Campus, The University of Tokyo, Meguro-ku, Tokyo, Japan

• Appointment Start Date: 1 October 2026

• Employment Period: 1 October 2026 – 31 March 2027

• Contract Renewal: Employment agreements may be renewed annually, subject to review based on budget, performance, and conduct.

Teaching Responsibilities

Selected candidates will teach one or more undergraduate English courses, including:

• English for Arts and Sciences (EAS)

• Intermediate English (Integrated Class, Group L)

• Common English

These courses form part of the Liberal Arts curriculum for undergraduate students (Years 1–4).

Teaching Load

• One to four classes per week.

• Each class is 90 minutes in duration.

• Depending on circumstances, classes may be extended to 105 minutes without additional compensation.

Working Conditions

• Working days and hours will be determined according to the regulations of The University of Tokyo.

• Days off generally include:

  • Saturdays and Sundays

  • Most national holidays

  • Year-end and New Year holidays (29 December – 3 January)

Compensation and Benefits

• Compensation: ¥4,000 or ¥6,000 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

• For payment purposes, each class is counted as two hours, regardless of whether it lasts 90 or 105 minutes.

• Transportation expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with university travel regulations.

• Insurance: Not applicable.

Required Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

• Prior experience teaching English at the university level

• Native or near-native proficiency in English

• A Ph.D. (or ABD with a strong publication record)

• The ability to teach assigned classes and periods

• Appropriate expertise and academic credentials relevant to the courses offered
