The Department of Media and Communication at the University of Oslo is inviting applications for a permanent position as Associate Professor in Media and Communication.

About the Position

The selected candidate will be expected to contribute to research, teaching, supervision and academic administration within media and communication studies.

The position provides substantial freedom to pursue independent research interests and collaborate with colleagues across the department’s research groups. Approximately half of an Associate Professor’s workload is reserved for research activities.

The appointed candidate may also apply for promotion to Full Professor based on personal academic merit and university procedures.

Teaching and Academic Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to teach broadly within media and communication at both bachelor’s and master’s levels.

Teaching responsibilities may include introductory and specialised courses in areas such as:

  • Media industries

  • Media policy

  • Media history

  • Media audiences

  • Children, youth and media

  • Media use

  • Related areas of communication and media studies

The candidate will also be expected to:

  • Supervise students at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels

  • Initiate and lead research projects

  • Participate in examination, assessment and curriculum activities

  • Contribute to departmental administration

  • Collaborate with colleagues in teaching and research

  • Support the development of the department’s academic environment

Candidates with knowledge of media use, media policy or media industries in a Nordic context are particularly encouraged to apply.

The ability to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language will be considered desirable.

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must possess:

  • A PhD or equivalent academic qualification in Media and Communication or a relevant discipline

  • An established record of international peer-reviewed publications

  • A strong record of research in media and communication

  • Demonstrated teaching and supervision experience at different academic levels

  • Ability to take responsibility for undergraduate and graduate courses

  • Fluent written and oral communication skills in English

  • Personal suitability and clear motivation for the position

Applicants should also demonstrate either:

  • A track record of securing national or international external research funding, or

  • Strong potential to attract competitive external funding

Assessment Criteria

  • Academic qualifications and research production in media and communication

  • Quality and originality of recent scholarly work

  • International peer-reviewed publications

  • Teaching experience in relevant fields

  • Pedagogical qualifications and documented teaching outcomes

  • Experience preparing funding proposals and obtaining external research support

  • Potential to contribute to the long-term development of the department

  • Leadership and administrative abilities

  • Capacity to build a positive and collaborative academic environment

  • Experience developing international research networks

  • Skills in public outreach, research dissemination and innovation

  • Knowledge of Nordic media use, media policy or media industries

Particular emphasis will be placed on the quality and innovative contribution of academic work published during the last five years rather than publication quantity alone.

Language Requirements

Applicants must have excellent written and spoken English skills.

Proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is advantageous, especially for teaching and administrative responsibilities.
