Position Overview

The Department of Environmental Science at the University of San Francisco invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor position for the 2027 calendar year (starting January 2027). The successful candidate will contribute to both the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science (ENVS) and the Master of Science in Environmental Management (MSEM) degree programs. Candidates with interdisciplinary training in ecology and/or water resources are preferred, though other specializations within environmental science and management will also be considered.

Key Responsibilities & Teaching Load

• Teaching Load: 24 units per year split between graduate and undergraduate programs.

  • Semester-long undergraduate courses (4 units).

  • Half-semester graduate courses (2 units).

• Course Delivery: Teach introductory, capstone, and elective courses in environmental science and management.

• Research Mentorship: Provide individualized support to graduate students developing and executing their graduate capstone projects, research methods, and Master's Projects.

• Institutional Service: Participate in departmental and college-level service activities.

Qualifications & Competencies

Minimum Requirements:

• Education: Earned Ph.D. or appropriate terminal degree in environmental science or a closely related field.

• Teaching Competency: Proven expertise to teach at least two or more of the following domains:

  • Introductory Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Statistics, Geospatial Science (GIS).

  • Natural/Water Resources Management, Ecosystem Science, Ecological Restoration.

  • Environmental Remediation, Risk Assessment & Management, Climate Change Mitigation, Urban Sustainability/Resilience.

• Research Advising: Demonstrated experience advising students in independent research projects.

• Mission Alignment: Strong record of university-level teaching, commitment to excellence in a culturally diverse environment, and alignment with USF’s mission.
