The Department of Journalism in the College of Media at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is inviting applications for a full-time (100% FTE), tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Media and Society. The appointment is expected to begin on 16 August 2027.

The department seeks an outstanding scholar whose research explores journalism and society in a rapidly evolving media landscape and who can contribute to the department's teaching, research, service, and public engagement missions.

Research Areas

Applicants with expertise in one or more of the following areas are encouraged to apply:

• Artificial Intelligence, algorithmic journalism, and newsroom automation

• Misinformation, disinformation, and trust in media

• Digital media ethics and platform governance

• Audience engagement, analytics, and news consumption

• Political communication, press freedom, and democracy

• Institutional transformation and the political economy of news production

• Journalistic agency, cultural authority, and human skills in the AI era

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will:

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in journalism.

• Develop new elective courses aligned with emerging areas of media studies.

• Conduct high-quality, impactful research.

• Contribute to departmental service and public engagement.

• Participate in the College of Media's interdisciplinary doctoral program through the Institute of Communications Research (ICR).

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should have:

• A Ph.D. in Journalism, Communication, Sociology, Information Sciences, or a closely related field by 16 August 2027.

• A strong record or demonstrated potential for scholarly research and teaching.

• Professional journalism experience is desirable but not mandatory.
