Overview of Role
The University of Alabama School of Law invites applications for a 12-month clinical faculty position to serve as the Director of the Domestic Violence Law Clinic at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor of Law or Clinical Associate Professor of Law.
The clinical faculty member will lead clinical operations, teach and supervise law students, provide direct client representation in civil protection and family law matters, and contribute to clinical scholarship and academic service.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Direction & Casework
Direct, manage, and supervise all daily operations, staff, and case files of the Domestic Violence Law Clinic.
Provide direct legal representation to victims of domestic violence, intimate partner violence, stalking, and sexual assault in civil protection orders, divorce, custody, and related family law matters.
Maintain relationships with local courts, legal service providers, community support agencies, and advocacy groups.
2. Clinical Teaching & Mentorship
Deliver specialized classroom instruction on domestic violence law, trial advocacy, ethics, and trauma-informed lawyering.
Supervise law students in client intake, case preparation, drafting pleadings, negotiations, and courtroom representation.
Provide continuous pedagogical feedback, evaluation, and professional mentorship to clinic students.
3. Scholarship & Institutional Service
Engage in clinical legal scholarship, policy development, or law reform initiatives.
Participate in faculty governance, committee service, and institutional diversity initiatives at the law school.
Qualifications & Candidate Profile
Education: Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school or equivalent advanced legal degree.
Bar Admission: Current member of the Alabama State Bar in good standing, or eligible for and committed to seeking admission to the Alabama Bar within a reasonable timeframe after appointment.
Practice Experience: Significant practical litigation experience in family law, domestic violence, protection orders, or related trial advocacy settings.
Teaching / Clinical Background: Prior clinical teaching experience, supervising attorney experience in a legal aid/clinical setting, or demonstrated commitment to experiential legal education is highly preferred.
