UGC NET December 2024: Key Updates on PhD Admission and Assistant Professor Eligibility
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially opened the application window for UGC NET December 2024, inviting aspirants to register at the official website ugcnet.nta.ac.in. Candidates can submit applications and pay the examination fee until December 11, 2024, by 11:50 PM. The exams are scheduled to take place from January 1 to January 19, 2025, with the detailed timetable and admit cards to be released closer to the examination dates.
Major Update: 4-Year Undergraduate Degree Holders Eligible for PhD via UGC NET
In a transformative decision announced by UGC Chairman Prof. Jagadesh Kumar earlier this year, candidates holding a four-year undergraduate degree can now appear for UGC NET for admission into PhD programs. This policy change, effective from April 2024, eliminates the previous requirement of a master’s degree for PhD eligibility through UGC NET, provided the candidate has secured at least 75% marks or an equivalent grade in their undergraduate studies.
Reserved Category Relaxation
Candidates from SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), and economically weaker sections (EWS) are entitled to a 5% relaxation in the minimum marks required for eligibility, aligning with the UGC’s commitment to inclusivity.
Assistant Professor Eligibility: Master’s Degree Still Mandatory
While this update facilitates PhD admission for four-year undergraduate degree holders, it does not extend to eligibility for Assistant Professor roles. As per current UGC guidelines, candidates must possess a master’s degree with a minimum of 55% marks to apply for assistant professor positions in central universities and other higher education institutions.
Application Process Simplified
Applicants must provide detailed academic information, including their program name, year of passing, university details, and whether their final results are awaited. The overall registration process remains consistent with previous UGC NET cycles, ensuring a smooth application experience.
