Raman–Charpak Fellowship 2025 – Call for Applications
The Raman–Charpak Fellowship 2025 invites highly qualified PhD students from India and France, as well as French Master’s students, to apply for an international research opportunity that fosters scientific collaboration, cultural exchange, and academic growth.
This Indo–French fellowship is named in honor of Nobel Laureates Prof. C.V. Raman (India, 1930) and Prof. Georges Charpak (France, 1992). It was launched in 2013 during the State Visit of the French President to India and is jointly funded by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India and the French Institute in India (IFI), Embassy of France, with implementation support from the Indo–French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research (IFCPAR/CEFIPRA) .
About the Fellowship
The Raman–Charpak Fellowship aims to:
- Facilitate exchange of doctoral students between India and France.
- Provide research exposure in cutting-edge labs and universities.
- Enhance future cooperation in science, technology, and innovation.
- Offer French Master’s students the chance to pursue research internships in India.
The fellowship is designed to improve doctoral and Master’s skills, broaden research perspectives, and strengthen academic networks while also giving scholars an opportunity to experience another culture.
Who Can Apply?
For PhD Students
- Indian applicants: Must be Indian citizens residing in India, registered for a PhD at a recognized university/research institute.
- French applicants: Must be French citizens residing in France, registered for a PhD at a recognized university/research institute.
- Eligible years: 2nd or 3rd year of PhD.
- Age limit: 30 years as on 1 April 2025.
For French Master’s Students
- Registered in Master 1 or Master 2 programmes in France.
- Must plan their visit to India during Master 2.
- Age limit: 30 years as on 1 April 2025.
Duration of Fellowship
- Minimum: 2 months
- Maximum: 5 months

Applicants may apply in the following broad domains :
- Atmospheric, Earth & Environmental Sciences
- Materials, Physical & Chemical Sciences
- Engineering Sciences
- Biological, Life & Medical Sciences
- Mathematical & Computational Sciences
- Agricultural Sciences
Fellowship Support
The fellowship provides comprehensive financial and logistical support:
- For Indian Fellows (going to France):
- €1710 per month (daily expenses, local travel, accommodation, social security)
- To & fro economy-class airfare
- Visa, registration, travel & health insurance coverage
- Additional support (up to €500) for attending workshops/seminars
- For French Fellows (coming to India):
- ₹40,000 per month (daily expenses, local travel)
- Accommodation up to ₹45,000 per month
- To & fro economy-class airfare
- Visa, registration, travel & health insurance coverage
- Additional support for academic events
Application Process
Applications must be submitted online only via the official CEFIPRA portal. Incomplete or postal applications will not be considered.
Required Documents (PhD students):
- Research Proposal (max 5 pages)
- CV (max 2 pages)
- PhD synopsis / research summary
- Recommendation letters from PhD supervisor & host supervisor
- No Objection Certificate (for Indian applicants)
- Valid passport copy & recent photograph
- Research experience / publication details (if any)
Required Documents (French Master’s students):
- Proof of current registration (Master 1 / Master 2)
- Highest diploma obtained
- Research plan (max 5 pages)
- CV (max 2 pages)
- Recommendation from French faculty supervisor
- Agreement letter from Indian host supervisor
- Valid passport copy & photograph
Important Dates
- Launch of Call: 29 September 2025
- Application Deadline: 10 December 2025
- Evaluation & Results: March–April 2026 (tentative)
- Start of Fellowship: After result declaration
