Delhi University Introduces Multiple Entry-Exit System in UG Programs under NEP 2020

New Delhi | August 2025 — In a major shift towards academic flexibility and learner-centric education, Delhi University (DU) has officially implemented the Multiple Entry and Multiple Exit (ME-ME) system in its undergraduate programs, in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022.

🧾 What Is the ME-ME System?

The ME-ME scheme empowers students with the flexibility to exit their degree program after completing any even semester and re-enter within a defined period, enabling continuity in education at a suitable time.

This system is based on a credit-based academic framework, where:

  • 1 credit = 1 hour of teaching or 2 hours of practical/field work per week
  • 1200 learning hours/year are expected

🪜 Exit Options and Recognized Credentials

Under the ME-ME system:

  • Exit after Year 1 (Semester II): 44 credits → Undergraduate Certificate
  • Exit after Year 2 (Semester IV): 88 credits → Undergraduate Diploma
  • Exit after Year 3 (Semester VI): 132 credits → Bachelor’s Degree
  • Completion of Year 4 (Semester VIII): 176 credits → Bachelor’s Degree with Honours / Research / Entrepreneurship

🔁 Re-Entry Provisions

  • Students can re-enter the same college/program within seven years, subject to validity of earned credits
  • Credit Validity:
  • 2–4 years depending on the exit qualification
  • Detailed guidelines provided for re-entry at different levels (after Year 1, 2, or 3)

For instance, a student exiting after the first year can rejoin in the second year (within 3 years) and still be eligible to complete a 4-year honours degree—provided the required credits are fulfilled.

Significance

This forward-thinking reform:

  • Enhances student mobility and academic flexibility
  • Aligns with India’s goals for skill-based, inclusive higher education
  • Supports learners with gaps in study, financial challenges, or early career opportunities
