About the Fellowship
The Ramanujan Fellowship is a prestigious and highly competitive initiative of the Government of India, administered by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF). The fellowship is designed to attract exceptional Indian and Indian-origin scientists and engineers working abroad and encourage them to return to India to pursue cutting-edge research.
The programme aims to strengthen India’s research and innovation ecosystem by providing long-term support, academic independence, and access to institutional infrastructure for high-impact research.
Objectives of the Ramanujan Fellowship

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must fulfill the following conditions:
Nationality & Work Status
- Indian citizens or Indian-origin scientists and engineers
- Currently working abroad at the time of nomination
Age Limit
- Below 40 years of age
Educational Qualifications
- PhD / MD or
- Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology (Engg./Tech.) or equivalent
Research Profile
- A proven and outstanding research track record
- Evidence through high-quality publications, patents, or recognized scientific contributions
Employment Condition in India
- The applicant must not hold any permanent, contractual, or tenure-track position in any Indian university, institute, or organization at the time of nomination
Nature of Support
The fellowship is awarded for a duration of 5 years, providing comprehensive financial and institutional support.
Financial Support
- Fellowship Amount: ₹1,35,000 per month (including HRA)
- Research Grant: ₹7,00,000 per year
- Institutional Overheads: ₹60,000 per year
This support enables fellows to establish independent research programmes and pursue innovative, high-risk, high-reward research.
Selection & Nomination Process
- Nominations are accepted throughout the year
- Selection decisions are taken twice a year
- Candidates are evaluated based on scientific merit, research impact, and future potential
