Key Requirements:
Focus on integrated decarbonization pathways for short-sea shipping and inland waterways.
Strong emphasis on technology, operations, and regulation together rather than separately.
Both original research and critical reviews are welcome.
Overview
This special issue explores how combined measures such as alternative fuels, hybrid and electric propulsion, wind assistance, port electrification, and operational optimization can work together to deliver net-zero emissions. It highlights the need for system-level analysis that connects technical choices with regulatory compliance and fleet-level decision-making. The issue is especially interested in life-cycle, techno-economic, and decision-support studies that provide realistic implementation pathways for waterborne transport.
Key Research Themes
Integrated evaluation of fuel, propulsion, and operational strategies.
Alternative fuels such as hydrogen, methanol, ammonia, and e-fuels.
Hybrid, battery-electric, and fuel-cell propulsion.
Wind-assisted propulsion and onboard renewable energy.
Speed, routing, trim, and energy management optimization.
Life cycle, cost, and socio-environmental assessment.
Compliance with EEXI, CII, MRV, and FuelEU Maritime.
Port electrification, shore power, retrofitting, digitalization, and automation.
