Overview
This special issue—published by Elsevier—aims to investigate the complex mechanisms required to scale "green deep tech" ventures. Unlike digital-first startups, green tech firms face extreme capital intensity, regulatory hurdles, and long development horizons. This collection seeks to identify the drivers of successful scaling, exploring how investment strategies, organizational experience, and supportive innovation ecosystems—such as science parks, accelerators, and corporate partnerships—can accelerate the global transition to sustainable technologies.
Key Research Themes
Investment & Financing: Criteria used by investors for green tech funding, mechanisms to close funding gaps, and the role of blended/impact-driven finance in de-risking ventures.
Scaling Dynamics: Analyzing the barriers and enablers of growth, including the influence of business model innovation, market timing, openness, and policy instruments on scaling success.
Organizational Adaptation: How ventures structure R&D, learn from failure, and refine organizational design to maintain performance during periods of rapid growth.
Ecosystem & Intermediary Support: The role of universities, science parks, incubators, and corporate partners in facilitating scaling and providing access to specialized resources.
Sectoral & Supply Chain Integration: How specific industry structures, supply chain requirements, and complementary innovation needs shape the scaling pathways for green deep tech.
