𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲

Distrust remains an underexplored yet highly prevalent phenomenon in environmental and natural resource management (NRM). Historical experiences of dislocation, dispossession, exclusion, and resource exploitation have shaped enduring patterns of distrust across many natural resource governance settings worldwide.

As governments and institutions increasingly adopt collaborative governance approaches centred on participation, inclusion, empowerment, and information sharing, understanding the role of distrust has become essential for achieving sustainable natural resource management outcomes.

This Special Issue seeks to advance knowledge on the antecedents, dynamics, and consequences of multidimensional distrust across diverse environmental and resource management contexts around the globe.

𝗧𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁

Submissions may address, but are not limited to:

• Distrust in collaborative natural resource management networks, both formal and informal
• Trust and distrust dynamics over time in common pool resource settings such as forests, fisheries, water, biodiversity, and soil management
• Methodological challenges in studying distrust within natural resource management contexts
• Implications of distrust for collaborative governance and collective action
• Distrust in rural planning, environmental governance, and urban ecosystem management
• Inter-organizational collaboration and resource protection under conditions of low trust
• Governance approaches for addressing distrust and improving sustainable resource management outcomes

𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀

The Special Issue aims to open the “black box” of distrust by examining how distrust shapes collaboration, governance performance, and collective action in environmental and natural resource management systems. It encourages research that offers theoretical, empirical, and methodological insights into the complexities of trust and distrust across diverse resource governance contexts.

𝗦𝘂𝗯𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀

• Manuscripts should not exceed 8,000 words, excluding references and graphics.
• Authors should select “Distrust Special Issue” during the submission process.
• All manuscripts will undergo the journal's standard peer-review process.
