Call for Papers
Opening the ‘black box’ of distrust in environmental and natural resource management
Journal: Society & Natural Resources
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
Submission Deadline: 30 June 2026

Overview
This special issue addresses distrust as an under-researched but important phenomenon in environmental and natural resource management. It argues that distrust is especially relevant in common-pool resource settings shaped by histories of dislocation, exclusion, dispossession, and deceit. The issue aims to improve understanding of how distrust affects collaborative governance, co-management, and collective action.

Detailed Scope
The call welcomes papers on distrust in collaborative natural resource management networks, the relationship between trust and distrust over time, and methodological challenges in studying distrust. It is especially interested in settings such as rural planning, environmental governance, resource management, urban ecosystems, and inter-organizational collaboration for resource protection. The broader aim is to advance collaborative governance scholarship and better explain how distrust functions across different natural resource contexts.

Submission Information
The word limit is 8,000 words, excluding references and graphics. Authors should select “distrust special issue” during submission. The call indicates a June 2026 deadline and expects publication in December 2026. Manuscripts should be submitted through the journal’s standard submission process.
