This Special Issue explores the role of accounting and accountability in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11): Sustainable Cities and Communities. The issue seeks to understand how accounting and accountability mechanisms can support inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable urban development by empowering local communities and amplifying citizen voices.
Recognising criticisms of the top-down implementation of the SDGs, this Special Issue focuses on how local communities can generate knowledge, influence behaviour, and participate in co-productive and participatory spaces that foster sustainable transitions. It invites critical investigations into how accounting and accountability practices can address urban challenges such as social exclusion, conflicts among stakeholders, and limited accountability to communities.
