Introduction
This Special Issue examines China’s growing role in fragile countries—those with weak institutions, high poverty, insecurity, and conflict—through investments, development initiatives, and peacebuilding efforts. It explores how Chinese state and private enterprises, government agencies, and international frameworks interact in fragile contexts, including complementary or alternative models to Western “liberal peace” approaches. The issue welcomes empirical and conceptual work on the social, environmental, and institutional impacts of Chinese engagement.
