The rise of populism across political systems has generated significant challenges for public management and administration. Populism often presents complex societal issues in simplified terms and proposes direct solutions that can challenge established governance principles, administrative norms, and constitutional arrangements.
This Special Issue seeks interdisciplinary contributions that bring together perspectives from public management, politics, law, and the social sciences to examine how populist movements and governments are reshaping public administration. It aims to explore whether traditional approaches to public management remain adequate and how public managers navigate tensions between political mandates, professional ethics, democratic values, and institutional responsibilities.
The issue welcomes both conceptual and empirical contributions that deepen understanding of the implications of populism for public administration, public services, and the public good.
